The General Secretary-Treasurer is a key role that keeps our basic union membership and financial processes going.
The union will be accepting nominations for the position starting September 4, 2021 at the begining of the Permanent Session of the Convention.
Position Details
Term of Office: 1 Year upon election at the annual referendum
Start Date: January 1st, 2022
The Requirements:
- Member of the union for at least 3 years, and never falling behind on your dues for 6 months or more within the last year and a half
- Legally entitled to work in the United States, Canada, or Mexico
Number of Nominations Required to be Placed on the Ballot: 2
Salary: $62,920USD

Main Responsibilities:

- Working under the direction of the General Executive Board, the GST is responsible for:
- Preparing, signing, and distributing charters issued by the General Executive Board or Regional Organizing Committees
- Credentialing union delegates
- Processing Branch Secretary-Treasurer reports and remittances
- Ensuring the membership database is updated and maintains status changes
- Collecting, compiling, and circulating information regarding Job Branches
- Process and track payments and spending, ensuring that all financial transactions are documented and reported in accordance with accepted accounting principles
- Ensuring that financial obligations are met in a timely and professional manner
- Acting as a co-signature authority for IWW financial obligations, in coordination with co-signatory Chair of the General Executive Board
- Managing accounting, financial documents, and governance documents
- Ensuring safe-keeping of financial records and other legally required paperwork
- Managing the union’s bank account and paying bills
- Managing office property
- Supervising staff employed at the Office of the General Secretary Treasurer
- Correspond with members, vendors, service providers, staff, and elected officers
- Responding to requests for information from members of the General Executive Board, other elected union officers, and general members
- Reporting to the General Executive Board and the membership regarding financial and other affairs related to the role
- Participating at IWW Conventions, Meetings of the General Executive Board, and other forums as required.
- Remaining in monthly contact with the Canadian Regional Organizing Committee
- Publishing a monthly union bulletin
- Maintain and update a manual related to the work for the GST role
Supervision Received:
- Supervised by the General Executive Board
Supervision Exercised:
- To ensure financial management and union record keeping is completed in a timely and professional manager, the GST supervises contracted service and staff related to their office
Nomination Period Opens:
- Start of the Permanent Session of the General Convention (September 4, 2021)
Nomination Period Closes:
- End of the General Convention (Approximately September 6, 2021 @ 5pm CST)
Note that when you receive your ballot to cast a vote in our union’s referendum in November, you will have an opportunity to write in a candidate of your preference regardless of whether they have been nominated
